The Mitte Cultural District was the vision of the Roy F. & Joann Cole Mitte Foundation when they provided funding for the Dean Porter Park restoration in 1998. They recognized that the area surrounding Dean Porter Park was home to most of the City’s cultural organizations and by designating this area a “Cultural District,” it would provide the impetus to promote and enhance historical, cultural, educational and family activities.

Today, the district serves as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike—offering opportunities to explore cultural exhibits, attend live performances, participate in community events, and experience the unique flavors and creativity of the area. From seasonal festivals and educational programs to outdoor markets and family-friendly activities, the Mitte Cultural District continues to foster connection, inspire creativity, and support the arts.

As it evolves, the district remains committed to the founding mission of enhancing access to culture and preserving the stories that shape the community. Through ongoing partnerships, thoughtful development, and a dedication to inclusivity, the Mitte Cultural District stands as a dynamic destination where tradition and innovation come together.
