Dancy Building

A beautifully restored historic courthouse and civic landmark known for its Classical Revival architecture, stained-glass rotunda, and lasting connection to Cameron County history.

Historic 1912 Cameron County Courthouse

The historic 1912 Cameron County Courthouse, now known as the Dancy Building, stands as one of Brownsville’s most treasured architectural landmarks. Named in honor of Oscar C. Dancy, who served as Cameron County Judge for a record-breaking fifty years, the building reflects both the civic history and enduring character of Cameron County.

Recognized as one of the most beautiful and architecturally significant county courthouses in Texas, the Dancy Building is also considered one of the notable achievements of famed Texas architect Atlee B. Ayres. Its design, craftsmanship, and historic presence continue to make it an important destination for visitors exploring downtown Brownsville and the Mitte Cultural District.

The building was rededicated on October 17, 2006, and today remains an active center of county government. It houses the County Judge, two County Commissioners, County Administrator, County Auditor, County Treasurer, Budget Officer, Civil Legal Division, Human Resources Department, Program Development & Management Department, and Emergency Management Department.
