About the Mitte Cultural District

The Mitte Cultural District includes some of the most exciting and fascinating cultural entities in the City of Brownsville. Located within walking distance of each other, these popular attractions are representative of the culture and diversity our great city has to offer.

The Mitte Cultural District was the vision of the Roy F. Joann Cole Mitte Foundation when they provided funding for the Dean Porter Park restoration in 1998. They recognized that the area surrounding Dean Porter Park was home to most of the City's cultural organizations and by designating this area a "Cultural District," it would provide the impetus to promote and enhance historical, cultural, educational and family activities.

"As the soil, however rich it may be cannot be productive without cultivation, so the mind without culture can never produce good fruit."

Seneca (Roman Philosopher, Mid-1st Century AD)

About the Mitte Foundation

The Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation was established as a result of the lifelong success, hard work, and vision of two extraordinary individuals. Roy Mitte was raised in Brownsville and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1949. Upon receiving teaching credentials from Southwest Texas State Teachers College, he married Joann Cole and joined the U.S. Army serving in Korea. After returning from the service, he became a teacher and basketball coach.

After a successful teaching career, Mr. Mitte entered into the insurance industry in 1959 helping to build one of the largest agencies in the nation. The Mitte's Achievements in Insurance and real estate enabled them to follow a path of philanthropic endeavors.

Persistence, perseverance, performance and participation are the values to which Roy and Joann Cole Mitte have dedicated their lives. These core beliefs led to their united decision to form a charitable foundation in 1994, awarding educational scholarships nationwide along with grants to communities and non-profit organizations. As growing up in Brownsville remains a pivotal moment and fond memory for Roy Mitte, the City of Brownsville and the Dean Porter Park renovation project were the recipients of a restoration charitable gift from the Mitte foundation.

From this extended generosity, came the Mitte Cultural District, the citizens of Brownsville are forever grateful for this generosity. All who visit the Mitte Cultural District will and forever enjoy the immense cultural and family experiences that the district has to offer.
