City Hall & Old Federal Building

A historic downtown civic building with roots as a federal courthouse, customhouse, and post office, now continuing its public role as Brownsville City Hall.

City Hall, also known as the Old Federal Building, is one of downtown Brownsville’s most recognizable historic civic buildings. Located along East Elizabeth Street, the building reflects a time when federal, postal, customs, and court functions were closely tied to the growth of the city’s downtown core.

The site has long been associated with public service and government activity. The earlier federal building at this location housed important federal functions, including the U.S. Court, Customhouse, and Post Office. The current structure, reconstructed in the early 20th century, features Italian Renaissance Revival influences, including a distinctive tile roof, decorative cornice, masonry details, and a strong civic presence along the street.

As City Hall, the building continues the site’s legacy as a place of public decision-making and municipal leadership. For visitors wandering the Mitte Cultural District, it offers an opportunity to see how Brownsville’s architecture tells the story of government, trade, border history, and downtown development. Its historic character and central location make it an important stop for anyone interested in the city’s civic heritage.
