Meet the artist: Ron Fondaw
May 15, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art is hosting St. Louis-based artist Ron Fondaw to create a sculpture centering on the current policies on immigration on the southernmost border of the United States. Working with students from local colleges and the larger community, Ron will create a site-sensitive “Portal of Hope,” or gateway, on the grounds of the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art, just a few blocks North of the Border Wall itself. The piece will be made of stabilized earth (adobe) and is inspired by the iconic aperture in the “House of the Governor” at Uxmal, Mexico, an ancient shape directing the eyes skyward.
Fondaw’s site-specific sculpture is designed to weather away over a two to four-year period. As the sculpture erodes, it will expose personal objects embedded in the adobe by those community collaborators, or those who, out of desperation, risk their lives to cross into the United States in hope of a better future.
This is the latest piece in Fondaw’s series of unfired clay sculptures – the works morph and change shape in unexpected ways as they weather back into the ground from which they came.
